Internal bra — Florida

Internal bra

The surgeons below are listed here on relevance only: their sweep record indicates they offer an internal bra. Inclusion is not an endorsement and not a claim about any product's regulatory status — the special-page content below states the regulatory position where provided.

Internal bra support means adding a layer of supportive material inside the breast during augmentation or a lift, intended to help hold the implant or breast tissue in position. State the central fact plainly: no mesh is FDA-approved or FDA-cleared specifically for breast use.

What does internal bra support mean?

In plain language, an internal bra is an internal sling or hammock of supportive material placed inside the breast, most often along the lower portion, during augmentation or a lift. It is meant to reinforce the body's own tissue, helping to hold the implant or reshaped breast in position and to slow sagging or implant movement over time. It does not replace a lift, it does not replace an implant, and it does not make a result permanent: tissue continues to age, and the material itself changes over time depending on what it is made of.

The materials discussed for this use include synthetic absorbable meshes and biological materials (acellular dermal matrices). They differ in how long they last in the body, how the body responds to them, and what happens if they need to be removed or revised — differences that should be explained before a patient agrees to one.

What is the FDA position on mesh for breast use?

No mesh is FDA-approved or FDA-cleared specifically for breast use. That statement covers every mesh product discussed as an internal bra, and it is the single most important fact on this page.

GalaFLEX, made from P4HB (poly-4-hydroxybutyrate), is sometimes mentioned in this context. GalaFLEX is cleared under a 510(k) clearance for general soft-tissue reinforcement only — not for breast surgery, and not as an internal bra. A 510(k) clearance for one use does not extend to other uses.

In a letter dated November 2023, the FDA stated its position that no mesh device is cleared or approved for breast surgery, including for use as an internal bra. Any use of mesh in the breast is therefore off-label: a lawful use of a marketed product for a purpose the FDA has not cleared it for, which a surgeon may choose but must disclose and justify with evidence and reasoning, not present as an approved application.

What should I ask at consultation?

  • What exact material would you use, and is it cleared for breast use or used off-label?
  • What benefit do you expect it to add in my case, compared with the same operation without internal support?
  • What evidence supports that benefit — and what evidence exists on added risks?
  • What are the added risks, including infection, extrusion, palpability, and the need for removal?
  • How long does the material last in the body, and what happens to it over time as it absorbs or remains in place?
  • How does it change the cost, and how does it change the revision plan if the result needs correction later?
  • If the material needs to be removed, how difficult is removal, and what would that operation involve?
  • Can you confirm your board certification? (Check the badge on each profile in this directory.)

What should I be cautious about?

Be cautious if a practice describes an internal bra material as FDA-approved for breast use, since that is not accurate for any mesh product; if the off-label status is not disclosed; if the benefit is presented as guaranteed rather than expected; or if the added cost and revision implications are not discussed. A surgeon who offers internal support should be able to name the material, explain why it is expected to help in the individual case, and describe what happens if it must be removed.

An internal bra is an option to evaluate, not a standard part of breast surgery. Many augmentations and lifts are performed without any internal support material, and the absence of mesh is not a deficiency in a surgical plan.
